Reflection:
The $10 food challenge was an eye opener. A lot of the time you think that you are not able to get a lot of healthy food on a small budget. It wasn't until I took this challenge to spend $10 and the amount of food I was able to get by weight surpassed the amount of junk I was able to get with $10. Sometimes we look at the quantity rather than the quality of the food that we are buying. It's understandable when you are trying to find the most for your money. |
I remember watching a filmed called, "A Place at the Table," a documentary that covered food insecurities in America. The Documentary talked about how families in poverty would usually purchase low quality food with a lot of preservatives. Usually it was carb. loaded and sugar loaded. If we taught how to actually shop and how to utilize these healthy foods, we could help in the fight against food insecurities.
This challenge taught me to be more conscious of the food that I am purchasing. By understanding what to purchase and how to utilize it, I am able to use the food that my body really needs to get through the day , rather than short pockets of energy that can have you come crashing and feeling unfit. Many times I thought that I could just go to a drive through and buy a hamburger for $1.00, but it was never fulfilling and I rarely had enough energy off of that food to keep me through the day.
The energy I got from unhealthy food never lasted and I always regretted what I ate. I felt heavy and weighed down and lazy. When I ate healthy food, I had energy. The knowledge of what I ate made me feel good. I had energy, real energy, it was great. The body not only benefits from eating healthy foods physically, but does wonders on
